Relying Party Center
Overview
The Relying Party Metering initiative introduced a new capability within the HITRUST platform to help organizations measure and manage relying party usage while supporting a scalable licensing and pricing model.
The objective was to design an enterprise experience that enabled organizations to monitor consumption, understand utilization, and support future revenue opportunities without increasing operational complexity.
Discovery
The project began with cross-functional discovery sessions involving product leadership, engineering, business stakeholders, and subject matter experts.
The initial request was simple:
"Design a way to track and manage relying party usage within the platform."
Rather than designing screens immediately, I focused on understanding the business objectives behind the request.
Through stakeholder interviews, product discussions, and workflow analysis, I identified how relying parties interacted with the platform, how usage should be measured, and how metering could support both customer transparency and long-term product strategy.
What We Discovered
As discovery progressed, several opportunities emerged.
Organizations needed a simple way to:
Understand their relying party utilization
Monitor license consumption
Track usage over time
Identify capacity limits
Make informed purchasing decisions
Reduce uncertainty around licensing
From a business perspective, leadership also needed a scalable solution that could support future pricing models while remaining intuitive for enterprise customers.
These insights shifted the project from simply displaying usage data to creating a product capability that aligned customer value with business growth.
My Design Approach
Using the insights gathered during discovery, I designed an experience centered around transparency, clarity, and scalability.
The solution focused on helping organizations quickly understand their current usage while making complex licensing information easy to interpret.
Key design considerations included:
Real-time usage visibility
Clear capacity indicators
Historical usage trends
License utilization summaries
Actionable status messaging
Responsive enterprise dashboards
Consistent design system components
The interface was intentionally designed to reduce cognitive load by transforming complex usage data into meaningful visual insights that support decision-making.
Collaboration
Throughout the project, I collaborated closely with product managers, engineering, executive leadership, and subject matter experts to refine requirements, validate workflows, and ensure the experience aligned with both technical capabilities and business objectives.
Regular design reviews and iterative feedback sessions helped evolve the solution as new product requirements emerged.
Outcome
The Relying Party Metering experience established a scalable framework for managing customer usage while supporting future licensing and monetization strategies.
Beyond improving visibility into platform utilization, the project introduced reusable enterprise design patterns that could be leveraged across additional administrative and reporting experiences within the platform.
The initiative demonstrated how thoughtful product design can connect user needs with strategic business objectives, creating value for both customers and the organization.
