Electronic Visit Verification (EVV)
Overview
The Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) platform was designed to help home healthcare organizations verify in-home care visits while meeting federal Medicaid compliance requirements.
The objective was to create an intuitive mobile-first experience that enabled caregivers to efficiently document visits in the field while providing agencies with real-time visibility into visit activity.
Beyond improving caregiver workflows, the platform helped reduce fraud, waste, and abuse by electronically validating when and where services were delivered, ensuring greater accountability, billing accuracy, and compliance.
Discovery
The project began with discovery sessions involving product managers, business analysts, care coordinators, provider agencies, compliance experts, developers, and stakeholders.
The initial request was:
"Design an Electronic Visit Verification experience that simplifies visit documentation while meeting federal EVV compliance requirements."
Rather than immediately designing screens, I focused on understanding the complete caregiver journey, agency workflows, and the compliance challenges surrounding visit verification.
Through stakeholder interviews, workflow analysis, and journey mapping, we identified opportunities to simplify documentation while improving operational oversight and reducing opportunities for inaccurate or fraudulent reporting.
My Design Approach
Using insights gathered during discovery, I designed a mobile-first experience centered around simplicity, trust, and compliance.
Every interaction was optimized to reduce administrative burden while ensuring visit information could be accurately captured and verified.
Key design considerations included:
Mobile-first workflows
One-tap Check In and Check Out
Today's visits prioritized on the home screen
GPS and time-based visit verification
Clear visit status indicators
Streamlined documentation
Large touch targets for caregivers
Accessible, WCAG-compliant interactions
Responsive design across mobile and tablet devices
Reusable design system components
The interface intentionally reduced cognitive load while guiding caregivers through each required step of the visit verification process.
Outcome
The redesigned Electronic Visit Verification experience streamlined daily caregiver workflows while significantly improving visit transparency and operational oversight.
The solution helped organizations:
Reduce fraud, waste, and abuse through electronic visit verification
Improve billing accuracy
Increase confidence in compliance reporting
Reduce manual documentation
Improve caregiver efficiency in the field
Provide supervisors with real-time visibility into visit activity
The project established scalable mobile design patterns that supported future enhancements while creating a more reliable and user-centered experience for caregivers and provider organizations.
Collaboration
I partnered closely with product managers, engineering, care coordinators, compliance specialists, QA, and business stakeholders throughout the project.
Through iterative design reviews, workflow validation sessions, and usability testing, we continuously refined the experience to ensure it aligned with regulatory requirements, technical constraints, and caregiver needs.
